Zoe Snape is a multidisciplinary artist, living and working in West Somerset, UK.
She works at her permanent studio at the East Quay art centre directly beside the sea in Watchet, where she is a member of the East Quay Artists group. Zoe is also a Somerset Art Works member and part of the artists collective HATCH. She has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art & Art History from Goldsmiths, University of London, and has exhibited in Portugal, London, Sheffield and Somerset. Zoe is a specialist in fine art photography, with a fifteen-year-long career working in galleries and auction houses such as Christie's, Bloomsbury Auctions and The Photographers' Gallery, London.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m a multi-disciplinary artist, exploring all mediums to examine my interest in the mental health implications of the Climate Emergency.

Transience is the theme of my art. Stimulating conversations about the nature of control, confinement, freedom, and flow, I ask the viewer to engage emotionally with my artwork, which aims to provoke inexpressible and challenging feelings, experiences or sensations.

My current subject matter is bubbles, and I’m currently exploring bubble prints to illustrate the power of breathing exercises to manage psychological states. More recently I have experimented with natural materials such as sea foam.

I'm inspired by the German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk’s theory of Spheres, and the author Rachel Carson's passion for the protection and preservation of the sea.

My interest for the subject matter originates in my personal life-long battle with asthma and anxiety, as a result of childhood illness, medication, and social confinement. To maintain my own health I swim in the sea, and my personal relationship to my local beach has led to my wider environmental concerns.
